I happen to hate awards shows. I think something happens to me when I see someone who is an actor actually get up and be themselves in front of people. I get uncomfortable because I do not want to see them fail to be charming or funny or, most importantly, INTERESTING. Talk shows are similar but at least they help actors out by having funny or interesting stories set up beforehand. With award shows, actors (especially if they win awards) are vulnerable and therefore, I have HUGE EXPECTATIONS. If you see an actor enough and they have longevity and a reputation for always being charming and interesting (like Tom Hanks or Tina Fey) it is much better, but ultimately, I just can't take the possibility of cringing at who they really are. I don't want the person behind the actor to ruin the actor for me. I think being naturally witty and funny in real life helps actors A LOT. When they are charming, tell a good story, hold your attention...you know they deserve to be doing what they are doing. When someone is actually drab, boring, nervous, too self-absorbed, then I think: how are you an actor? Isn't it your job to keep up appearances?
So, on to Tina Fey.
She is always funny, and interesting, and she is never cringe-worthy in a bad way. She is genuinely funny, and always trying to be thoughtful. She doesn't build herself up so much that she can't be non-funny. She is not the greatest actress, but she sticks to what she is good at, which is smart. And she's always smart, even when she is low-brow. She is approachable but also deserves this high comedic honor. I just love her!
Here is her brilliant speech receiving the Mark Twain Prize for Comedy:
